Job Title: Standby Man
Description
The position of Standby Man plays a critical role in maintaining workplace safety, particularly in industrial and construction environments where hazardous work is performed in confined spaces or under high-risk conditions. The purpose of this role is to ensure the well-being of workers operating inside tanks, vessels, or other enclosed areas by continuously monitoring their activities and maintaining communication with them. The Standby Man acts as the primary safety link between the workers inside confined spaces and the external safety or rescue teams. This position is essential in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, and heavy manufacturing, where safety compliance and preventive measures are vital for avoiding accidents or life-threatening situations.
Key Responsibilities
A Standby Man is responsible for ensuring that all safety protocols related to confined space entry are strictly followed. The core duties include monitoring workers who enter confined spaces, maintaining visual or verbal communication, and keeping an accurate log of entry and exit times. In case of an emergency, the Standby Man must immediately raise the alarm and coordinate rescue operations without entering the confined area themselves. The role also involves checking the condition of safety equipment, such as gas detectors and ventilation systems, before authorizing entry. Additionally, the Standby Man ensures that work permits and TUV certifications are valid and that all personnel comply with company and regulatory safety standards. Regular reporting to the safety officer and timely coordination with supervisors are also key parts of this job.
Skills and Knowledge
To perform effectively as a Standby Man, candidates must have strong knowledge of industrial safety practices and confined space procedures. A minimum of five years of experience in the same or related safety role is required. Candidates should possess a TUV certification and Ajeer Chamber registration, as both are mandatory for legal employment in Saudi Arabia. Excellent communication skills, situational awareness, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are essential traits for this position. A valid Iqama and an updated CV are compulsory for application. Candidates should also have technical knowledge of gas monitoring, risk assessment, and rescue protocols to act promptly in case of an emergency. Training in first aid and fire safety is an added advantage.
