Fire watch man
Job Title: Fire Watch
Description
The Fire Watch role is one of the most crucial positions in industrial and construction environments, particularly within high-risk zones such as oil refineries, petrochemical plants, and large-scale infrastructure projects. A Fire Watch is responsible for maintaining safety during hot work activities like welding, cutting, and grinding—tasks that present a potential fire hazard. This role serves as the first line of defense against fire incidents, ensuring immediate response and communication in case of emergency. In regions like Ras Al Khair, where heavy industrial projects are ongoing, Fire Watch personnel are indispensable in protecting both workers and property, maintaining compliance with safety regulations, and ensuring smooth, uninterrupted operations on site.
Key Responsibilities
A Fire Watch’s primary responsibility is to monitor and supervise any work that involves open flames or sparks to prevent fire outbreaks. They inspect the work area before and after hot work to ensure that all combustible materials are cleared or adequately shielded. During operations, they maintain a constant watch, equipped with fire extinguishers and communication devices, ready to act instantly if an unsafe condition arises. Fire Watch personnel are also required to maintain a safe perimeter, alert nearby workers of potential hazards, and report unsafe practices to supervisors. After the completion of hot work, they conduct a post-inspection to ensure that no smoldering materials or hidden sparks remain. Through diligence and attention to detail, Fire Watch workers help create a secure and compliant work environment.
Skills and Knowledge
To perform effectively, a Fire Watch must have a solid understanding of fire prevention methods, hazard recognition, and emergency response procedures. Candidates should be physically fit, observant, and capable of maintaining focus during long shifts. A strong sense of responsibility, teamwork, and communication skills are vital for coordinating with safety officers and workers on site. Basic knowledge of firefighting equipment—such as extinguishers, alarms, and hoses—is mandatory, as is the ability to act calmly under pressure. For projects like those in Ras Al Khair, it is essential that Fire Watch personnel are registered under Ajeer Chamber and possess proper documentation and safety training certificates. Experience in industrial environments, especially in oil and gas or construction sectors, is an added advantage.
