Job Title: Standby Man / Fire Watch
Description
The position of Standby Man / Fire Watch plays a crucial role in ensuring workplace safety in industrial and construction environments. These professionals are the first line of defense during hot work operations, confined space entries, and high-risk maintenance activities. Their primary responsibility is to prevent fire-related incidents by maintaining constant vigilance, monitoring activities, and being prepared to act instantly in emergencies. In industries such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, and heavy construction—especially in regions like Yanbu, Saudi Arabia—Fire Watch and Standby Man roles are indispensable for compliance with safety regulations and for safeguarding both personnel and property.
Key Responsibilities
A Standby Man is responsible for maintaining safety oversight during high-risk operations such as welding, cutting, or confined space work. They ensure that no unauthorized person enters hazardous areas, continuously monitor environmental conditions, and maintain communication with workers inside the workspace. The Fire Watch aspect of the job involves monitoring for sparks, flammable materials, or signs of fire during and after hot work. These workers must be ready to operate fire extinguishers, raise alarms, and execute emergency response procedures without hesitation. Additionally, they record safety observations, check that all fire prevention equipment is functional, and ensure that safety protocols are strictly followed throughout the job. Their vigilance directly reduces the risk of accidents, making their role both essential and respected across industries.
Skills and Knowledge
Candidates applying for the Standby Man / Fire Watch position should possess strong awareness of industrial safety procedures and emergency response practices. They must be physically fit, attentive, and capable of maintaining focus for long periods. Knowledge of fire prevention, hazard identification, and confined space regulations is vital. Good communication skills, discipline, and teamwork are equally important since these professionals often coordinate with safety officers, supervisors, and technical staff. While formal education requirements are minimal, previous experience in industrial safety or fire monitoring is highly beneficial. Applicants must also provide valid documentation, including Iqama, passport, Muqeem (3 months), medical fitness, insurance, and CR records.
