Key Responsibilities

The main duty of a Firewatch is to continuously observe ongoing hot work operations to identify any signs of fire, sparks, or unsafe conditions. They must ensure that all fire safety equipment, such as extinguishers and water hoses, are within reach and in proper working condition before any hot work begins. Firewatch personnel are required to inspect the surrounding area for flammable materials, secure them, and maintain a clear workspace. During active operations, they remain alert, monitoring both the welder and the environment to catch hazards before they escalate. In case of an emergency, the Firewatch must act quickly to extinguish small fires or raise an alarm to alert others and initiate evacuation procedures. After the completion of work, they must stay on-site for a specified period to ensure that no smoldering embers or hidden flames remain. Documentation, reporting incidents, and supporting safety officers are also part of their daily duties.
