In the oil, gas, and construction industries, this position ensures that workers performing welding, cutting, or maintenance activities do so under constant supervision for safety compliance. The Standby Man’s presence is essential in emergency preparedness, as they serve as the first line of response to any incident. They monitor the environment, enforce safety protocols, and alert emergency teams if needed. Their vigilance helps prevent accidents, making them a vital component of workplace safety systems.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a Standby Man is to continuously monitor the work area to ensure safety compliance and respond to emergencies. This includes keeping watch during hot work, confined space entries, or maintenance tasks where hazards like fire, gas leaks, or oxygen deficiency may occur. The Standby Man ensures all workers have valid work permits, checks atmospheric conditions when required, and keeps communication open between the workers and the control room. They must ensure that rescue and fire equipment are available, functioning, and easily accessible. In case of an emergency, the Standby Man initiates evacuation procedures, provides assistance, and reports incidents promptly to the safety officer or site supervisor. Their constant alertness reduces risks and ensures the protection of all personnel on-site.

Skills and Knowledge

To perform effectively, a Standby Man must possess solid knowledge of workplace safety standards, fire prevention measures, and emergency response procedures. They should be familiar with confined space entry protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE), and hazard identification. Good communication and observation skills are critical, as the role demands continuous attention and quick decision-making in emergencies. Although a formal degree is not mandatory, training in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) or fire watch procedures adds value. Prior experience in industrial or oil and gas projects is highly preferred. The Standby Man must also be physically fit, disciplined, and capable of handling stressful situations with calmness and professionalism.
